Corona has shown that Western culture is deeply flaawed

I live in Japan, and have done so for the past 8 years or so. Since moving here, I have come to see the west in a far less favorable light. Self indulgence outweighs the need of the group, whereas in Japan, the group must always come first. Conformity is important, but freedom is allowed, but there is a time and a place.

But this mask bs is a whole new level of selfishness. I have NEVER in my time here seen people complain about wearing face masks. In fact, I've seem people openly apologize that they can't wear one due to being out of stock, and people offering them spair ones.

Yet in the ignroant US and UK, we see people flighting because they have to wear one. The "me, me , me" mentality is truely set in. Unlike in Asia, where people understand that wearing a mask is about protecting others, not just yourself, the idiot west take it as an afront to their freedoms and liberty.

Frankly, the behavior of segments of people in the west, espcially in America, makes me absolutely sick to my stomach.

I don't think I've ever held a lower opinion of the British public than I do right now. Any hope that this crisis would reignite a long-lost sense sense of community, consideration for others and respect for the natural environment has been thoroughly dashed. If anything, people have become more selfish and entitled than ever. No one is social distancing. People are spending more time in nature, but only to litter, vandalise and otherwise ruin it for those of us who genuinely respect it. Very few people are wearing masks on public transport. In my city, chavs are having mass drunken brawls at the beaches and parks every time the sun comes out.

No one has learned a fucking thing from any of this. COVID-19 only became a global pandemic in the first place because China and the WHO saw a catastrophe on the horizon and chose to stick their heads in the sand, a strategy the Tories seem to be copying wholesale with the enthusiastic consent of a populace too disgustingly thick and self-centred to comprehend anything beyond their own short-term gratification.

Asian culture has its own flaws. Let's not forget that it was their barbaric treatment of animals in wet markets that led to this.

That said, yes the fact that Britain and America have dealt with this so appallingly shows that a major shake up of our entire political system and culture is needed. It has made me laugh seeing all the right wingers like Sargon and PJW and Pat Condell who normally try and pin all the evils of the world on socialism struggle with the fact that their beloved capitalism is collapsing under the strain whilst more socialist countries like Vietnam and China itself have survived.

Vietnam recorded its first Covid death just a few days ago. I think America has slightly more. (No disrespect to the Americans who lost their lives. Their victims of their country too.)

All the right wingers can do is pin the blame on China through conspiracy theories that China wanted to destroy the West. I don't believe that at all. You can blame China for their stupid wet markets, but that's an old hang up from their past. It has nothing to do with their mixed economy.

Now is the time for proper left wing politics to make a comeback, but sadly I fear that the SJWs are still going to hold us back with their divisive race baiting crap.

I'd argue the influence of American style capitalism in the UK is the reason why the UK is doing so badly. What happened to our community spirit? It's been eroded by evil American ideology which our media and political class have thrust upon the public.

I wash my hands of the west now. I intend to denounce my British citisenship as soon as I can attain Japanese. I feel utterly disgusted to even call myself British now.

I agree to some extent that we started to embrace American culture a bit much from the 80s on. It was probably the collapse of the British film industry that helped cause it, as we had slowly lost our importance in the world over the previous 60 years, but in the 60s we at least dominated the entertainment industry (something which the Americans whinged about in American Pie.) That gave us a lot of pride in our country, and a place on the world stage regardless of how shallow. However in the 70s even that fell. Whilst there have been a few revivals since, like the second British invasion and the third one in 00s, basically we're nothing on an international level but the American's lackeys (I also blame Blair for that too, among many other things.)

That said I wouldn't get too ashamed of your own culture and roots or develop too rosey a view of another culture. Japan has its own problems and its own bloody history too. (In WW2 they were so vicious that even the Nazis begged them to show clemency in their treatment of the Chinese. When the Nazis say "Steady on a bit boys" how far do you have to go.)

Added to that Japan also has its problems with misogyny, suicide rates, animal cruelty and a severe stigma towards the mentally ill.

Most cultures have their good and their bad parts (though obviously some like Nazi Germany and Saudi Arabia are just bad all around LOL) Most go through their bad and good periods too, and Britain is certainly in its worst period post war. I try not to turn any place into the promised land however, but if you have found somewhere you feel accepted, that is great but try not build it up too much.
